A woman who hit headlines after she shot and killed an armed robber outside her daughter’s school has been elected to congress in Brazil.
Shocking security footage caught the moment off-duty cop Katia da Silva Sastre, 42, came face-to-face with Elivelton Neves Moreira, 21, outside a school in Sao Paulo in May.
Moreira could be seen approaching a crowd of children and their parents while holding a gun; quick-thinking Sastre pulled out her own weapon and shot the man three times – hitting him in his leg and chest. He later died in hospital and Sastre was hailed a hero for her actions.
Sastre, who has two young daughters, decided to run for congress following the incident earlier this year and yesterday she was voted in. She was the seventh most popular candidate out of 70 that ran in the whole of Sao Paulo.
In a somewhat controversial move, Sastre – who used the name Policewoman Katia Sastre on ballot papers – included the footage of her shooting Moreira in her election campaign video.
In the video she told voters: “I shot him, and I would shoot again.
“I will always have the same attitude in fighting crime. I have courage.”
Opposing politcal parties attempted to get the footage removed from the campaign video, but the Superior Electoral Court ruled in Sastre’s favour.
Speaking in May after the incident, Sastre said: “I didn’t know if he was going to shoot the kids or the mothers or the security guard at the school door.
“I just thought about defending the mums, the children, my own life and my daughter’s.”
Adding: “I had to act quickly to end his aggression and prevent him from harming anyone. I reverted to the training I have received in the corporation.
“It’s gratifying to have been in the right place to have saved all our lives.”
Sastre’s husband, military police lieutenant André Alves said: “The suspect’s gun fired once, but it is not known whether or not it was before Katia fired.
“The first shot ricocheted and got lost. On his second attempt at firing, the weapon locked. Thankfully she was faster than him, because when a thug discovers (their opponent) is a police officer, he shoots to kill.”
In total, Sastre scooped 264,000 and is one of a number of candidates voted in who has a tough stance on crime.
